The Indian government plans to collaborate with US-based technology giant Microsoft to offer low-cost broadband connectivity to over 500,000 villages across the country. Low-cost broadband along with cloud computing intelligence is expected to fuel creativity, efficiency and productivity across governments and businesses. This will promote access to affordable products and services.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communications and IT has stated that 55,669 uncovered villages across the country will be provided mobile connectivity by 2018 in a phased manner. The initiative, which is part of the government’s Digital India programme, will be funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund. Under the Digital India programme, the government plans to provide high speed internet and mobile connectivity across the country, provide government services online, promote electronic manufacturing, and create jobs for youth.
